The history of the flag of the bisexual movement

The LGBTQIA+ movement has its official flag but each part of the movement has its own

The bisexual movement has its official flag, in which it recognizes itself. A flag that represents love and attraction towards different genders which over time has become the emblem of unity, diversity and pride.

The first official flag of the bisexual pride movement was created in 1998 by Michael Page to have greater visibility of the community as a distinct group between homosexuals and heterosexuals.

Previously the bisexual movement used a simple upside-down pink triangle (a symbol used in Nazi concentration camps to identify homosexual prisoners), superimposed on the blue triangle which formed a purple triangle. Unfortunately it was not a suitable symbol to be imprinted on flags or brands. And so Michael Page decided for a flag made up of pink, blue and purple.

The bisexual pride flag is made up of three horizontal stripes arranged as follows:

Pink (top) representing attraction towards people of the same sex;

Purple (in the center) which represents attraction towards people of the opposite sex;

Blue (at the bottom) which represents the attraction towards both genders.

Over the years, the flag has become one of the most important symbols for the bisexual community, which is celebrated every year on September 23 as World Bisexual Pride Day.

The bisexual flag continues to be a key symbol for the bisexual community. It represents the struggle for acceptance, visibility and equality, and remains a reminder that love and attraction are not limited by defined genders. With every wave, the bisexual flag proudly declares that bisexuality is valid, it’s real, and it deserves to be celebrated.
