The Human Rights Council of the United Nations has passed a groundbreaking resolution regarding intersex people

Ultimately the UN Human Rights Council ruled that medical procedures not strictly necessary for the “normalization” of intersex people are considered a violation of human rights.

Pseudo-medical treatments on intersex people date back to the 1950s and include surgical interventions and hormonal treatments and the damage caused by these forced medical procedures is many – both physical and mental -, particularly if performed at an early age.

Surgical interventions can cause: chronic pain and loss of sensation and function of the genital organs.

While the damage caused by unwanted and not carefully monitored hormone therapies consists of various side effects, as well as a sense of alienation towards one’s body.

But it is the mind that suffers the greatest damage. In fact, the intersex person will feel violated in their body and soul. Many – after these treatments – experience anxiety, trauma, depression and difficulty accepting their identity.

The data shows that 1.7% of the world population is intersex, that is, born with physical, genetic or hormonal characteristics that cannot be included in the conventional definitions of the two genders considered “main”: male and female.

The UN resolution is another step forward towards the self-determination of intersex people in the world, even if the road towards equality is still very long and difficult.
