The International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) is a global voice for the international LGBTQIA+ community that works tirelessly to promote equality and combat all forms of discrimination
The association was founded on 8 August 1978, and it is a federation – at a global level – which brings together more than 400 lesbian and gay associations and is committed to ensuring that every person can freely live their sexual identity and of gender without any fear and in the light of the sun.

The birth of the ILGA occurred during the Campaign for Homosexual Equality conference in Coventry, England, which was attended by 30 people representing 17 organizations from 14 countries.
The first name of the association was International Gay Association (IGA), until 1986 when it took its current name. And the first association for civil rights for homosexuals was “The Society for Human Rights”, founded in Chicago in 1924.
The Coventry Conference launched an appeal to Amnesty International to begin addressing the problem of the persecution of gay and lesbian people around the world. A battle that lasted 13 years, at the end of which Amnesty International included the civil rights of LGBTQIA+ people in its mandate.

And it is also thanks to the contribution of the International Lesbian and Gay Association that the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses.
With over 1,700 members in more than 160 countries, ILGA is a point of reference for LGBTQIA+ issues. It works to influence international policies, provide educational resources and support local communities in the fight for human rights.
