Genoa, yes to the souvenir for civil unions

Souvenir booklet not only for civil marriages but now also for same-sex civil partnerships

Genoa City Council recently approved a resolution providing for the issue of a souvenir booklet for same-sex couples who decide to enter into a civil partnership. Previously, this special souvenir was intended only and exclusively for the bride and groom of civil marriages. Not any more.

The proposal is signed by the Democratic Party and, as reported by GenovaToday.it, the battle to obtain equal treatment for civil ceremonies has been quite long – 2 years – until the vote a few days ago.

“It was an unbearable inequality to couples getting married in a civil ceremony, the Municipality of Genoa gives a souvenir booklet with the names of the bride and groom and the celebrant and some photographs of the Strada Nuova palaces and historic villas. Until now, however, the gift of the booklet was reserved for marriages between men and women, while civil unions received a small parchment”. This is the note of the Democratic Party.

On the subject of the delay, Dem group leader Alessandro Terrile said: ”It is quite clear that the reasons for this anomaly were not of an economic nature, as deputy mayor Nicolò tried to explain, but of an entirely political nature, as denounced by several centre-right councillors at the time of the vote. It took us a few months too long, but we are satisfied to have eliminated an obvious and unbearable disparity in treatment that affected the people of Genoa at an important time in their lives”.
