The film “The Birdcage” (1996) was based on the French comedy ‘La Cage Aux Folles’ by Jean Poiret and is a remake of Edouard Molinaro’s 1979 film of the same name.

The plot features a gay couple with Robin Williams as Armand Goldman, owner of a well-known LGBTQ club whose main star is Albert Goldman a.k.a. Starina, played by a masterful Nathan Lane, then still unknown to the public. The two try to marry Armand’s son to his fiancée, the daughter, however, of an ultra-conservative couple played by Dianne Wiest and Gene Hackman.

And today, giving an interview with Today he wanted to recall when Robin Williams avoided an outing during the Oprah Winfrey Show telecast.

And I certainly wasn’t ready to go from one interview to the next and tell them I was gay. I just wanted to talk about how I had gotten the part. Then again, it was a really important role. I had no desire to share details about my sexuality. I don’t think Oprah was trying to come out, but before we went on the air I told Robin, ‘I’m not ready. I’m really very afraid to talk to Oprah. I really don’t feel like discussing my homosexuality on national television, no, I’m not ready.’ He replied, ‘Oh, that’s okay, don’t worry about it. If you don’t want to talk about it, we won’t talk about it.
