The state of Tennessee is being sued by a trans boy for ‘excluding him from society’ with its anti-trans laws.
Luc Esquivel (14) decided to sue the State of Tennessee over the law restricting boys’ participation in birth sex teams. The federal lawsuit was filed by the ACLU on behalf of Luc Esquivel himself, who was barred from participating on the boys’ golf team at Farragut High School in Knoxville because he was transgender.
I couldn’t wait to try out for the boys’ golf team, and if I did, I would practice, compete and learn from the other boys to improve my game.

Unfortunately, Tennessee State Governor Billy Lee signed into law SB 228 last March, which requires student athletes to participate in sports teams based on birth sex and not gender identity.
Luc’s mother, Shelly Esquivel, also protested the anti-Trans law: ”It’s heartbreaking to see him lose this high school experience, and it’s painful for a parent to see their child subjected to discrimination because of who they are. I am proud that Luc is taking this step, and his father and I are with him all the way”.
According to Luc Esquivel’s attorneys, this law violates the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which states that the Laws of a State of the Union shall protect and treat all persons just as Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any education program or activity that receives federal funds. And SB 228 marginalizes transgender people.
