Homophobia in Pisa (Italy), insults, and threats to a gay couple

Homophobia certainly does not go on holiday, especially in summer

A recent case of homophobia in Pisa, at the Tirrenia beach at the ‘Bagno degli Americani’ where other bathers verbally attacked a couple of young, engaged couples just for exchanging simple kisses.

Here is what Riccardo –one of the victims– told the newspaper ‘Il Tirreno’.

We were lying down and giving each other kisses, that’s all. At a certain point we heard shouting from the next beach umbrella ‘Enough, enough, stop it’. At first, we didn’t even understand what was going on, then we got up and saw that they were mad at us”.

Continuing the story, Riccardo speaks of three families who lashed out at him and his boyfriend.

‘”Go to the bathroom and do what you want. But here in the open, no. Do as God commands, there are children here”.

This was the tenor of the insults received by the couple, later accompanied by physical threats: “I’ll kick your ass”.

Unfortunately, among the many people on the beach at the time, only two girls from Northern Europe intervened in support of the attacked couple.

Even today in 2022, we are forced to witness these homophobic attacks for a simple gesture of affection between people of the same sex, when in the case of a heterosexual couple in an intimate attitude there would have been no shortage of stadium cheers from those present, as has often happened in various situations.

Yet “REDEMPTION DAYS” is not a novel that takes away space for hope, the same feeling that will take possession of the protagonist’s page after page, directing them to arrive very differently from the departure, a goal in which ideas change, the true virtues emerge, evil and perversions are finally removed, to achieve so, in different ways, their individual redemption.
