Grindr – the most popular gay dating app – has disappeared from several app stores in China, where the government has tightened control over the internet, removing online behaviour deemed harmful to the population.

For about a month now, the IT authority has been waging a full-scale war to remove all illegal and sensitive content for the Lunar New Year period and the Winter Olympics to be held in China in February.

Although homosexuality was decriminalized in 1997, same-sex marriage is still banned and at the same time everything related to the LGBTQ community remains taboo. And as The Guardian reports, the LGBTQ community itself is under pressure from the Beijing government, with web censorship and depictions of gay love stories banned in films.

According to Apple, the developers of Grindr have already removed it from the Chinese App Store, while their direct local competitors – e.g. Blued – are still available for download.
