Uzbekistan and the introduction of an anti-LGBTQIA+ propaganda law

The list of anti-LGBTQIA countries continues to grow, with Uzbekistan joining Russia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Georgia in the path of total censorship

Uzbekistan has recently announced the introduction of a new anti-LGBTQIA propaganda law, similar to those in Russia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Georgia.

The leader of the ruling Milliy Tiklanish party, Alisher Qodirov, said on his Telegram channel that the government was currently drafting a law that would ban any kind of LGBTQIA content.

In Uzbekistan, male homosexuality is illegal and punishable by up to three years in prison, while female homosexuality is legal. The new legislation is seen as a new step towards total censorship, banning any public portrayal of non-heteronormative behaviour and relationships.

Despite intense international pressure, Alisher Qodirov defended the LGBTQIA anti-propaganda law, saying it was necessary to protect traditional Uzbek values and prevent the influence of foreign ideologies.
