Democratic senators have successfully blocked a controversial anti-transgender bill
The “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act“, strongly supported by the Republican Party, was defeated in the Senate by a vote of 51 against, 45 in favour and 4 abstentions (including two Republican senators).
If passed, the bill would have amended the 1972 law known as “Title IX“, which guarantees equal opportunities for women in sports and education, to state that eligibility for female sports participation is based solely on the biological sex assigned at birth. This effectively excludes transgender people.
Democrats attacked it, saying it was an act of discrimination against transgender people and would certainly not help protect cisgender women. Supporters of the controversial bill have argued, as they always have, that the presence of transgender athletes in women’s competitions could jeopardise gender equality and create performance gaps. However, according to several sources, the number of transgender athletes is very small and there are no conclusive scientific studies confirming the biological advantage of transgender athletes over cisgender athletes.
A vote that represents a victory for the civil rights of transgender people in the United States, but which lays the foundation for a war against the creation of a new white, heterosexual and rich America imposed by President Donald Trump and his “right-hand man” Elon Musk.
