‘Deeply unfair’ to allow transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports
Gavin Newsom, governor of the state of California, has gone against the grain of his own party and said it would be “deeply unfair” to allow transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.
A potential contender for the 2028 presidential election, Gavin Newsom not only leads one of the most liberal states in the United States of America, but has long been a true pioneer of civil rights for the LGBTQIA community, until his latest comments on his new podcast ‘This is Gavin Newsom’.
His first guest was Charlie Kirk, conservative and pro-Trump. And when it came to discussing the issue of transgender athletes in women’s competitions, the two found themselves in agreement.
“I think it’s an issue of equality. I completely agree with you on that,” Newsom said. “It’s an issue of fairness, it’s deeply unfair. We have to own it. We have to acknowledge it.”
Comments that have sparked opposition from many Democrats: “We woke up deeply sick and frustrated by these remarks.”
Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot called Governor Newsom’s comments about transgender athletes “disgusting”.
And to think, the current Democratic governor of California has always positioned himself to the left of the Democratic Party on LGBTQIA rights throughout his long political career. In 2004, as mayor of San Francisco, he ordered the city clerk to issue same-sex marriage licences when they were not yet allowed under state and federal law. Not only did he make California the first sanctuary state for transgender youth, but he also protected school curricula that included LGBTQIA history.
It is a signal that California Governor Gavin Newsom’s thinking on LGBTQIA civil rights may be changing.
