In March 2023, Uganda’s parliament toughened the current Anti-Gay Law

Uganda’s Parliament has tightened the noose around the necks of gay citizens even tighter, deciding to toughen the current Anti-Gay Law by adding new criminal offenses.

Here are the new anti-gay measures below:

  • Life imprisonment for gays
  • Prison sentence for those who cannot report a gay person to the authorities
  • Death penalty for abusers of minors and vulnerable people
  • Imprisonment penalty for all owners of property used for gay sexual recreation and also for civil rights organizations
  • Life imprisonment for HIV+ people who have sex with minors
  • Sanctions for media and associations that advocate gay civil rights

A Law that will also be applied to Ugandan citizens living abroad, and in this case there is provision for the extradition of Ugandans ‘guilty’ of being gay. Although it will be difficult to implement because many nations will oppose any extradition requests sent by the Ugandan government. Foreign nationals living in the country will also be subject to this new Anti-Gay Law.

In the meantime, the opposition has actually sped up the timetable for passaging the Anti-Gay Law to get President Yoweri Museveni into international trouble for having to sign that Law. A signing that will make Uganda even more at risk from the country’s gay community.

The situation quickly escalated. Many LGBTQI activists, through various statements given to the BBC, recounted several incidents in which many gay citizens were involved. Many families have reported their gay children to the authorities. There have been increasing cases of blackmail (including by local police) against gay people who, if they refuse, risk life imprisonment.
