In recent years, Uganda has stood out for its particularly severe and homotransphobic laws towards the LGBTQ+ community

The Constitutional Court of Uganda recently rejected a popular petition for the annulment of one of the most repressive laws for the LGBTQ+ community.

A law – known as the “Anti-homosexuality Law 2023” – which was introduced in May 2023, and which provides for very harsh sanctions for LGBTQ+ people, and even includes the capital punishment for the crime of “aggravated homosexuality“. Even though it hasn’t been enforced for years, it remains a symbol of government repression against the LGBTQ+ community.

The Constitutional Court of Uganda has ruled that there are not sufficient grounds for the annulment of the “Anti-homosexuality Law 2023” or even for suspending it, rejecting the popular petition.

A decision that sparked several international protests, and indignation and concern among international human rights activists. The approval of the homotransphobic law has not only had repercussions on the daily life of the LGBTQ+ community, but also on the international relations of the African state.

In fact, the World Bank has decided to suspend new loans intended for Uganda, while the United States of America has adopted various sanctions against Uganda itself.

The fight for LGBTQ+ rights in Uganda is representative of the challenges the community faces globally.

The recent decision by the Constitutional Court of Uganda represents a step backwards for human rights, but also a catalyst for collective action and positive change.

The story of this battle is still unfolding, and the world watches and supports Uganda’s LGBTQ+ community in their quest for justice and equality.
