Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan launches Year of the Family
In recent months, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stepped up his rhetoric against the country’s LGBTQIA community, while also launching the Year of the Family.
In a public speech, Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that Turkey’s LGBTQIA community will never have a voice in Turkey and insisted that traditional family values are strong. This statement was followed by a harsh verbal attack on the opposition, whom the Turkish President accused of supporting the civil rights of the LGBTQIA community.
Not only that, but he reiterated the concept that the family is sacred in Turkish culture and promised to strangle anyone who dares to question this sanctity.
The Turkish president’s anti-LGBTQIA rhetoric is not new. In the past, he has described LGBTQIA civil rights as a degeneration and accused its members of attacking Turkey’s national and spiritual values.
These statements have raised concerns among human rights groups, who fear increased discrimination and violence against LGBTQIA+ people in the country.
