Tom Daley’s crochet work on display in Tokyo

After retiring from diving, Tom Daley shows off his work

Former British Olympic diving champion Tom Daley, who recently retired from competitive diving, flew to Japan for a solo exhibition of his knitting work.

His return to the city where he won the gold medal with teammate Matty Lee in 2021.

For me, knitting is a way of escaping, it’s what helped me win Olympic gold here in Tokyo.”

Some of his work – on display until 25 November – will then be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to support an LGBTQIA organisation in Tokyo. And it was in the

Japanese capital during the Tokyo 2021 Olympics that he was filmed knitting in the stands of the stadium.

I love knitting because it’s incredibly good for your mental health. If you’d told me five years ago that I’d be more famous for knitting than diving, I’d probably have laughed. But I can’t imagine my life without knitting.”
