The Trump era arrives at Meta

Meta says goodbye to diversity, equity and inclusion programmes for employees and suppliers

Mark Elliot Zuckerberg’s Meta (Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) has announced the immediate discontinuation of its Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) programmes for employees and suppliers.

The decision was motivated by the changing legal and political landscape in the United States of America, namely the beginning of Donald Trump’s second presidency in the White House.

DEI programmes for Meta are no longer considered current and necessary. This announcement comes after the removal of the fact-checking system (introduced in 2016), which limited the spread of fake news and offensive content on social networks.

A decision that has sparked much criticism from many experts and activists, who believe that the removal of DEI programmes could have many negative consequences for equality and inclusivity within Meta. A clear sign that Meta is repositioning itself on the anti-LGBTQIA line of the new tenant of the White House, Donald Trump.
