Thailand to fund hormone replacement therapy for transgender people

A step forward for the civil rights of transgender people in Thailand

In a major announcement, the Thai government has decided to allocate significant funding for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for around 200,000 transgender people.

This allocation represents a step forward for the civil rights of transgender people in Thailand, a nation at the forefront of gender reassignment surgery.

What is hormone replacement therapy? It is an essential treatment that helps reduce gender dysphoria while improving the quality of life for transgender people.

It can include the use of oestrogen, testosterone or a combination of both. Each treatment is, of course, personalised according to the needs of the patient.

The decision has been welcomed by the entire Thai LGBTQIA community and human rights organisations.

Thailand is already considered a top destination for gender reassignment surgery, thanks to its highly skilled surgeons and relatively low costs.

This new funding for HRT further confirms Thailand’s role as a global leader in transgender health.
