Tennessee, LGBTQIA community rallies against homophobic pizzeria

A peaceful demonstration against a pizzeria that refused to cater a gay wedding

In Red Bank, Tennessee, the pizzeria “Pizzeria Cortile” has decided to refuse catering services for a same-sex wedding.

The decision was made public by the same pizzeria after a screenshot of a conversation between a customer and the pizzeria’s managers was published on Reddit, sparking outrage from the LGBTQIA community.

The lack of catering services for same-sex weddings, the managers of Pizzeria Cortile explained, was due to the personal conventions of the owners, but “without judging others“.

Pizzeria Cortile’s decision not to serve same-sex weddings is not illegal in the state of Tennessee; in fact, a law was passed in 2015 that prohibits penalising businesses or individuals who refuse to provide services based on “deeply held conventions“.

The LGBTQIA community has said: “We should work to put the businesses that support us on a pedestal and work to make the city a better place.”
