Some European Union members increasingly hostile to the LGBTQIA community
The list of European Union member states questioning the protection of the rights of LGBTQIA citizens continues to grow. After Hungary and Bulgaria, Slovakia could now have its own anti-LGBTQIA law.
Slovakia could soon adopt rules restricting “LGBTQIA propaganda” in school buildings. The following bill – proposed by the nationalist right to its government allies – would aim to “protect children” from influences that are considered to be in strong opposition to the Slovak constitution. It is a proposal that has caused some discontent even within the government majority itself.
This proposal will define what is meant by “non-traditional sexual orientation” and prohibit its “promotion” in schools of all levels. And schools that violate the new law risk fines of up to 30,000 euros.
The law’s authors – four Slovak National Party (SNS) MPs, including its leader Andrej Danko – have stated that ‘society is based on traditional values that define marriage as an exclusive union between a man and a woman‘ and that ‘the bill aims to protect children and young people from influences that could conflict with constitutional principles‘.
If approved by parliament, Slovakia would join Hungary and Bulgaria in the crusade against the LGBTQIA community. A very dangerous drift for the entire European Union that must be stopped immediately.
