Spain could see the right to abortion and gay marriage enshrined in its constitution
Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish Prime Minister, has announced the inclusion of the right to abortion and same-sex marriage in the Spanish Constitution.
The announcement was made during the 41st National Congress of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) in Seville.
Prime Minister Sanhez declared his government’s intention to include in the Spanish Constitution “the right of women to decide on their own bodies” and also “same-sex marriage”.
Rights which have already been recognised by the Spanish legislature but which, once enshrined in the Constitution, cannot be subject to future political change.
Naturally, the announcement has provoked various reactions. Civil rights groups and various LGBTQIA organisations have warmly welcomed Prime Minister Sanchez’s decision, while right-wing parties and ultra-conservative organisations have not at all appreciated the decision to include the right to abortion and gay marriage in the Constitution.
