Moscow government crackdown on LGBTQIA movement hits Elton John
Recently, the Moscow government declared the Elton John AIDS Foundation an “undesirable organisation”. And banned its activities throughout the Russian Federation.
The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office cited the foundation’s “promotion of non-traditional sexual relations, Western family models and gender reassignment”.
The Elton John AIDS Foundation was founded in 1992 by British musician Elton John to fight HIV/AIDS and support the international LGBTQIA community.
Despite this, the Moscow government believes that Elton John’s foundation has a negative attitude towards traditional Russian values and is involved in Western campaigns aimed at discrediting Russia.
Unfounded accusations.
In recent years, the government in Moscow has tightened restrictions on LGBTQIA organisations, labelling the international movement as ‘extremist’ while banning gender transitions and the fight for civil rights.
A story that highlights the tensions between Russia and international organisations that support LGBTQIA civil rights, and raises questions about the future of freedom and inclusion in Russia.
