Liechtenstein has become the 22nd European country to legalise same-sex marriage. The new law – which will come into force on 1 January 2025 – was approved by Parliament (May 2024) by an overwhelming majority, with 24 out of 25 members voting in favour.
A law that was supported by both political parties: the Patriotic Union (centre-left) and the Progressive Citizens’ Party (conservative). A very important change for Liechtenstein.
A process of recognising same-sex marriage that began in 2011, when Liechtenstein approved civil unions for same-sex couples, albeit with fewer guarantees than heterosexual marriage. And now, under the new law, couples in civil unions will be able to convert their unions into marriages through an administrative process.
This change is not only a victory for the LGBTQIA community in Liechtenstein, but also a significant step towards greater equality and acceptance across Europe.
