Few transgender athletes in the National Collegiate Athletic Association
According to the latest data, less than 0.002% of the 510,000 NCAA athletes in the US collegiate sports world are transgender. A figure that confirms the poor representation of transgender athletes in the world of college sports.
Every day, transgender students face numerous challenges and barriers to participating in college sports. All because of a lack of inclusion policies, not to mention discrimination and a lack of adequate support from college structures.
Unfortunately, despite much progress, transgender athletes are still a minority.
The NCAA could do more to promote inclusion and diversity in college sports, including implementing inclusion policies and providing adequate support for transgender athletes.
Several organisations such as GLAAD and Athlete Ally are working to raise awareness and promote the inclusion of LGBTQIA+ athletes in sports, but the election of Donald Trump to the White House could undermine all of this work to include transgender athletes, given his anti-LGBTQIA policies.
