The Islamic Court in Bauchi State has sentenced three men to death for being homosexuals
The same police chief who had made the arrest made the announcement of the death sentence by stoning for the crime of homosexuality. The three men were arrested on 14 June and sentenced to death by stoning.

Both arrestees–including a 70-year-old man–pleaded guilty to the crime of homosexuality, although without a defence lawyer.
They now have 30 days to overturn their conviction by appealing the sentence. Remember that for any death sentence passed by Sharia (Koranic Law) the Governor must approve courts.

In Nigeria–and in many other African countries–homosexuality is considered illegal. In Articles 214 and 217 of the Penal Code, it can be read that “any person who has carnal conjugation with another person against the natural order or allows a man to have carnal conjugation with a man or a woman against the natural order is guilty of a serious and punishable offence of imprisonment for 14 years”.
