Hungary’s Minister of Culture has fired with immediate effect Laszlo L. Simon, director of the National Museum.
The dismissal was based on a violation of the Anti-LGBTQ Law, which prohibits showing LGBTQ content to minors. The charge was allegedly for allowing minors under the age of 18 to enter the “World Press Photo” exhibition where LGBTQ photos by photojournalist Hannah Reyes Morales would be visible.

Through his Facebook page, the now-former director of the National Museum Laszlo L. Simon confirmed his dismissal. Still, he denied that the museum-which he headed-had deliberately violated the Anti-LGBQT Law. Claiming that museum staff could not check visitors’ IDs, so enforcement of the ban on under-18s was not executable.
This decision raised many concerns about freedom of the press and the Hungarian state’s – continued – discrimination against the LGBTQ community.
