In the end, the worst ones won, Fratelli d’Italia and Lega bring Italy closer to Poland and Hungary.

The proposal signed by Fratelli d’Italia and Lega to skip the examination of the articles of the DDL Zan and the Law against homotransfobia passed with 154 votes in favour and 131 against with 2 abstentions. All because of the secret ballot. Senate President Casellati has now suspended the sitting, which will resume at the end of the conference of group leaders.

At the outcome of the vote that officially scuttled the Zan bill, the right-wing benches started chanting, shouting and applauding as if they were in a stadium instead of the Senate of the Italian Republic. A squalid spectacle that shows the true face of the Italian right – Lega and Fratelli d’Italia -.

As Andrea Marcucci, Senator of the Democratic Party, points out: ”It is clear that there has been a transfer of votes from the centre-right, at least twenty votes, but I honestly did not expect this vote. We will also have to reflect on how this matter was handled. If this is the conclusion, it means that mistakes have been made. I am very sorry, it is very serious damage for the country. We have to reflect on what happened, it is a serious defeat for the whole Parliament, and I am very bitter.
