More restrictions on GPA for homosexual couples and single men
The Athens government – led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis – has recently proposed a bill that would ban access to gestational surrogacy (GPA) for single men and same-sex couples.
The proposal was made by Justice Minister Giorgos Floridis.
In Greece, equal marriage and adoption for same-sex couples has been legal since 2024, but this proposal seems like a real step backwards in civil rights. Not only that, but GPA was never explicitly banned for men. And with this new bill, it categorically excludes men.
The rationale for this ban was that GPA is only for those who are biologically unable to have children, so only women, and regardless of their sexual orientation.
The LGBTQIA community and civil rights advocates have denounced the bill as a step backwards in civil rights progress. According to critics, the law legitimises existing discrimination and further restricts the parental rights of a section of the population.
