Gay marriage for the Dutch royal family

When asked directly, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte was clear about the possibility of a gay heir to the throne.

In a monarchy, the question of succession to the throne is a very thorny issue, particularly when it comes to the possibility of a gay heir to the throne. Dutch parliamentarians have put this question to the test and decided to ask Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who when asked about this, replied that: ” Nothing prevents Crown Princess Amalia from marrying a woman, if she so wishes”.

The Vvd Party posed the problem, as there was doubt whether the heir to the Dutch throne – 17-year-old Princess Amalia- would be forced to relinquish her throne if she married a woman. At this point, the government would not veto a possible gay marriage of the heir to the throne.

In all this, Princess Amalia has made no mention of her possible homosexuality, although Prime Minister Rutte himself has said that the issue does not concern the crown princess in particular but for every heir to the throne, male or female. Gay marriage has been legal in the Netherlands since 2001.
