Federal Judge Thomas Parker put an end to the much-discussed Senate Bill 3 passed by the State of Tennessee

This Law included a ban on drag shows in public places. A Law that would have protected minors from who knows what dangers. An anti-trans law! Now, however, the word ‘end’ has been put.

Federal Judge Thomas Parker has finally blocked the first law in the United States of America to ban drag shows in public places. Curiously, he was appointed by former US President Donald Trump, certainly not an ally of the US LGBTQ+ community.

Eventually, after a two-week temporary injunction then extended until 26 May, federal judge Thomas Parker ruled against Senate Bill 3 on 2 June, declaring it ‘unconstitutionally vague and substantially vague‘.

UK, no monarchy-we are LGBTQ+

According to Federal Judge Parker: ‘It is substantially too broad for it to apply to public property (…) there may be a minor. (…) carelessly, if not intentionally, passed the AEA with the inappropriate purpose of attacking what is constitutionally protected. The Court notes that the text of the AEA discriminates against a certain viewpoint, imposes criminal penalties, and covers a virtually unlimited geographical area“.

This victory represents a triumph over hate. Our rights enshrined in the First Amendment have today been reaffirmed as drag artists and theatre performers. It is a moment worth celebrating as we kick off Pride Month, but our work is not done. The assault on the LGBTQ+ community continues across the country through anti-trans, homophobic and draconian laws that seek to silence expression and identity, we will remain outspoken and vigilant.

This was the statement issued by the LGBTQ theatre groupFriends of George‘, who had sued Senate Bill 3.
