Historic decision by Italian Bishops’ Conference on gay seminarians
Following Pope Francis’ words about too much “homosexuality” in the Roman Catholic Church, the Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI) has come out in favour of admitting homosexual seminarians, on condition that chastity is respected.
This decision, which has provoked various reactions both inside and outside the Roman Catholic Church, represents a real turning point in the Roman Catholic Church’s policy on homosexuality.
In its official statement, the CEI has emphasised that sexual orientation should not be an obstacle to a religious vocation, but only if future priests live in accordance with the Roman Catholic Church’s teachings on chastity. And this rule also applies to heterosexual seminarians.
“We welcome all those who feel called to the priesthood. However, a life of chastity is a fundamental aspect of priestly life and cannot be compromised,” said a spokesman for the CEI.
It remains to be seen whether this decision to allow gays into seminaries will be welcomed and implemented in the various dioceses, but it is clear that this decision by the CEI has sparked a debate about faith, sexuality and inclusion within the Roman Catholic Church.
