A closure that leaves a void in the world of women’s sport
In Sydney, Australia, the New Year brought news of the closure of the Ladies League, Australia’s first and only all-female sports bar.
Located on Oxford Street in Darlinghurst, the bar had been a vibrant hub for all women’s sports fans since opening in 2024.
More than just a bar, the Ladies League had transformed into a safe space for the entire LGBTQIA community, especially lesbian and queer women.
A closure dictated by the difficult economic climate and also the pressures of the cost of living, according to owner Rose Valente. She also expressed her deep gratitude for the support of the community and hopes that the closure of her bar will not deter others from pursuing similar initiatives in the future. And it will.
