A wave of hatred threatens the LGBTQIA community in South Africa

South Africa, a nation open to the LGBTQIA community, is slipping into homotransphobia.

A nation whose constitution guarantees equality for all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, is experiencing a growing wave of hate and violence against the LGBTQIA community.

The most dramatic episode of this wave of hatred occurred on 10 August this year, when a young transgender woman (22 years old), Clement Hadebe, was found lifeless with multiple gunshot wounds in Johannesburg.

A murder that triggered a series of negative reactions on social media, where many blamed Clement Hadebe for his gender identity. Pure transphobia. One of the many challenges that the entire South African LGBTQIA community faces on a daily basis.

According to experts and organisations fighting for the protection of LGBTQIA civil rights, they have not remained silent and have expressed deep concern about what is happening in the country.

In particular, the South African government’s silence on incidents of violence against members of the LGBTQIA community could be a form of silent complicity that could undermine the fundamental rights of these citizens.

Both the international community and human rights organisations are calling on the South African government to do more to protect the civil rights of the entire LGBTQIA community and to combat hatred, discrimination and transphobia.
