2026 World Cup: Mexican LGBTQIA fans expect homophobic incidents

The 2026 World Cup is going to be held in Mexico, Canada and the United States of America, and there’s a real risk of homophobia.

Mexican LGBTQIA soccer fans have expressed several concerns about the homophobia they could face during the international sporting event. Despite the Mexican Football Federation and FIFA trying to get rid of homophobic chants in stadiums by unofficial fans, there are still cases of homophobia in stadiums.

For instance, there were homophobic chants during the friendly soccer match between the national soccer teams of Mexico and the United States of America in Guadalajara. These incidents have caused a lot of anger and concern among fans and various Mexican LGBTQIA organisations.

FIFA also got involved, fining the Mexican Football Federation and imposing bans on fans, but this wasn’t enough to completely eliminate the problem of homophobia in football stadiums.
